Island Womens Refuge

Island Women’s Refuge is the only organisation on the Isle of Wight solely working with Domestic Violence.

Island Women’s Refuge (IWR) first opened its doors in May 1991 and is the only organisation on the Isle of Wight solely working with Domestic Violence.  IWR is a feminist collective run by women for the rights of women.

We provide advice, assistance and temporary safe accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence.

The refuge represents

·        Shelter and safety from immediate danger

·        Time and space to recover physically and mentally from the abuse

·        Advice information and advocacy (benefits, legal, housing)

·        Contact with others who have had similar experiences

Since 1991 more than 1045 women and children have lived at the refuge.  The refuge has 6 family units and can accommodate up to 15 children.  There is a disability en-suite room and the ground floor has full disabled access.

IWR also operates a 24-hour Helpline, which receives more than 2000 calls per year from women seeking advice and information.  The Helpline is run by workers and volunteers, all of whom receive training from the Telephone Helplines Association.

IWR has an outreach service that allows women to access information and support within the community either by telephone or in person.  This service is funded by SRB, Community Fund and Comic Relief.

All women who use IWR services are invited to contribute to its running and are encouraged to join the organisation at any level.  We currently have one ex user worker, one ex user trustee and many of our volunteers were previously our clients.

IWR is funded through a combination of local donations, grants from trusts and charitable bodies, housing benefit revenue and a contract with the Local Authority.  We liaise with both voluntary and statutory sector organisations and are members of the local Domestic Violence Forum, Supported Housing Forum, Social Security Forum and the Voluntary Sector Cabinet and Healthy Living Centre Partnership.
