The Commission for Equality and Human rights (CEHR)

The Commission for Equality and Human rights (CEHR) will replace the Commission for Racial Equality, the Equal opportunities Commission and Disability Rights Commission.

A newly formed single body which will deal with issues of equality will see the integration of the existing separate equality commissions in a move by the government to facilitate the ways in which discrimination is managed.

Partricia Hewitt, Trade and Industry secretary  and Minister for Women stated:

“By bringing these bodies  into one organisation we will make life much easier for individuals to get help and advice, especially when they are discriminated against on more than one level.”

Membership of the group is said to be representative of the different communities and  equality issues in todays society, such as disability , race, age, and gender.

Patricia Hewitt calls for a linked approach whilst dealing with discrimination because:

“As individuals , our identities are diverse, complex and multi-layered. People don’t see themselves as solely a woman, or black, or gay and neither should our equality organisations”.

According to the 10 Downing Street newsletter, the move  is

"a result of one of the biggest review of equality institutions in the 25 years" and will

“provide more joined up advice for individuals, businesses and communities fighting inequality”

However the impact of the new equality commission in terms of the level of effectiveness  in tackling discrimination and support of human rights can only remain to be seen over time
